Ship Board Bailer

Ship board bailer
Here you see me starting the bailer. I made it out of a scrap of White Ash left over from making Fredia's Oseberg bed. The bailer is based on a harbor excavation find at Hedeby.

Numerous bailers were found and the scoops have most often been preserved at boat yards and ports. It is probable that the scoops were used in more ways than to bail water, but this one is attributed to being a water bailer. I left the tool marks in. The tools used to make it were a saw, chisels and a drill. Most of the bailer's found were purly functional and not a great deal of time was spent to finish or carve them. The bailers that were found were broken and showed signs of heavy use with worn leading edges.
