The fourth grade of the Denver Waldorf school spends a large part of their semester studying Norse culture and Myths. As a capstone event, the teachers asked if we could set up an encampment for the children to experience first hand elements of the culture that bred the Myths.
The children were told only that they would be "going for a hike" and that they were bringing their Viking shields (made of 14" diameter cardboard rounds they had painted for their plays) The event quickly became known as the "H"iking Day field trip among the school's parents and teachers. As the children walked away from their cars, they began to hear horns blow. Then some spotted some warriors amongst the trees. Know the kids KNEW something was up, and the classes formed up into two lines to march into the camp. They were received by the camp's elder, Lodin, and told they were going to be put to work helping with the camp chores for the day as they began to build a new longboat for the summer's voyages.
